Case has to do with whether women were allowed to enroll and attend a military academy run by the state of virginia, the vmi (virginia military. Vmi cadets fought in the civil war (long tradition, young men in virginia would apply for admission in vmi) Didn"t admit women -> extreme training and high demands for physical fitness -> a lot of hazing. Sodomy statutes (used to harass and persecute gay people) Law must be necessary to a compelling governmental interest. Law must be substantially related to an important governmental interest. Law must be rationally related to a legitimate governmental interest. This low standard was generally applies to laws that discriminated based on sexual orientation. Laws in some states did protect rights of gay people when it comes to certain things (i. e. , california and the unruh act)
