CRM/LAW C108 Lecture Notes - Lecture 19: Elijah Anderson, Street People, Code-Switching
Document Summary
Lifetime likelihood of imprisonment (prison, not jail; a year or more) Black men = 1 in 3: people state that black men, on average, go to prison more than college. African americans are disproportionately arrested for drug possession and sale. The use of marijuana is about the same between whites and blacks (i. e. , based off self-reports) We have disparities in race not only in drug crimes but also in violent crimes. African american men particularly are more likely to commit violent crimes like murder, but they are more likely to be victims of violent crime. Even if we got rid of these disparities based off substance and drug use, we would still have disparities in violent crimes. Theories focus on either economic or social disadvantages for explaining why certain people commit crime. Theories of race: change the focus and connect the social and economic disadvantages to policies and practices. Areas are the product of redlining, social discrimination.
