Supposedly a better environment for children to be married. Part of the rituals that happen at different life stages. When having children -> expectation to be married. Formal declaration to the world of commitment level to each other. Married couples tend to be happier & live longer. Want to be recognized as a united front. To predict & regulate inheritance (part of the laws of each state) Civil marriage (marriage in us under us law) -> wholly secular institution. No religious ceremony is required to validate a state marriage. Involves contract between three parties -> state & 2 partners that marry. Institution of marriage developed in response to two class-based social needs: Central way to coordinate socioeconomic life & to maintain class division. Van eyck, 1434 the arnolfini marriage. Bestowed upon people who can afford & want to secure their wealth. Marriage basis for financially caring for members of society before government created these structures (like welfare)
