Previously laws focused on violence within immediate family. Over time definition of what constitutes an intimate relationship has broadened legally. Nature of the relationships determines whether violence is considered domestic violence or some other crime. Living together or used to live together (more than just roommates) There is a bright side of intimacy but have to consider possible characteristics that can breed violence. Activities pertaining to long term planning, investments, things they do throughout the day, etc. Develop common interests in terms of things to do, where to go, etc. More time for risk of violence to actually occur. Do not have choice about family context in which you are born. Not likely can leave that context until reach certain age.
