Refers to a type of organization that exists within a society -> can exist not only at the societal level but also at micro level in family organization. Certain shared beliefs about violent behavior & when it is acceptable/not acceptable. Legitimating violence in certain circumstances can cause it to spill over into other situations. Idea that males are dominant & females are subordinated. Participation in social life, income opportunities, educational opportunities, etc. Form of organization where men are in positions or authority & dominance. Women in positions of subordination & submissive to male authority. Society is organized around male dominance & female subordination that is reproduced in virtually all social settings, including the family. Greater access to resources for men & devaluation of women. Weakening of moral restraints against violence against women. Masculinity traditionally men being socialized into education, good job, & having his own family, being assertive, being unemotional, being in control.
