Mental health problems in jails and prisons. 106,532 inmates in 358 jails and 233 prisons. 26% of jail inmates and 14% of prisoners met threshold for serious psychological distress in past 30 days. Prescription medication was the most common form of treatment for them. Do most violent people suffer from serious mental health problems before committing violence. They interviewed 12 experts on mental health and violence to address several questions. Which serious mh problems increase violence risk. Many forms of mh problems are not predictive of interpersonal violence. Positive psychotic symptoms, particularly when conjoined with substance abuse increase violence risk. The 12 experts on mental health and violence, when asked the following question. Low base rate for violence makes it difficult to predict. Standardized screening instruments are better, but most clinicians. Violence, mental disorder, and the legal system rely on their judgement about violence.
