One of the central tasks of civilization is to control aggressive behavior, the social contract establishes strong external control mechanisms to inhibit aggressive behavior, and socialization is shaped to internalize prohibitions against aggression. Erosion of external and internal inhibitory controls raises the probability of violence. Diminished expectations of punishment, weakening of values counter to aggression, substance abuse, desensitization to the awfulness of violence, externalization of blame, and social contagious disinhibit aggressive behavior. There is something wrong with me and it has to be someone else"s fault - mindset. Our socialization has traditionally fostered internalized prohibitions against aggression.
