Place which is socially isolated, self-sufficient, and maintains 24-hour control over its inmates or patients. Refers to socialization process through which inmate learns rules and regulations of institution and informal rules, values, customs, and general culture of penitentiary. System of norms that influence the prisoners" behavior, typically to a greater extent than the institution"s formally prescribed rules. Norms are informal, unwritten rules with severe repercussions/punishment from fellow inmates if broken even to the point of death. Women"s accounts of their prison experiences: a retrospective view of their subjective. In-depth interviews with 54 former female inmates to uncover major pains of imprisonment and elements of prison subcultures. Prison protests, disturbances, and riots: more vulnerable yet given less care in prisons. Custodial care problems: pregnant women giving birth in prison, children outside prison needing care .
