Initial appearance - during first court appearance, prosecutors ensure defendants are notified of charges against them. Preliminary hearings - establish probable cause and decide to no longer prosecute cases when appropriate. Information and indictment - prepare information report that establishes probable cause and binds accused person over for trial. Arraignment - arraign felony defendants (bring accused to court to answer to matters charged in information or indictment); also participate in plea negotiation. Pretrial motions - as representatives of state, prosecutors initiate and participate in argument of pretrial motions.
