EDUC 124 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Critical Discourse Analysis, Model Minority, Asian Americans
Document Summary
Group 1: the problematization of cambodian adolescent boys in us. Culture expectations placed on asian americans as a group. Less than 34% have less than high school diploma. Hegemonic masculinity: not white, middle class, or male. Little d discourse: specific set of images, sentences, and conversations that are shared and experienced. Big d discourse: broader ideology firm which conversations, images, and beliefs are embedded and understood. Big d dominant discourse + controls action of member of society + interprets action of others. Academic tracking for them: tend to be placed in non-asian courses so they tend not to try to achieve as much. They don"t have the support behind them so they don"t" want to try as much. But cambodians were lumped together with asians instead of being labeled as south east asian. Supposed to be pretty racially diverse but there"s residential segregation going on here. Large cambodian enclave located in impoverished, racially diverse community.
