Document Summary

We are always solving - problem solving is the ultimate test of transfer. Correct sequence of steps (operations) will lead to a solution. May not know when you reach it. Mental set: solution that has worked in the past - negative transfer. May help us quickly assess and solve new problems. Type of mental set regarding the functions of things. We tend to only see solutions that involve using an object in its expected manner. (using a trash can to catch liquid) Can get in the way in our problem solving if we only see things in certain ways. Algorithms - specific operational steps that guarantee a successful outcome - recipe. Heueristic: general problem solving strategy that does not guarantee the proper solution. Brainstorming - creating a large number of possible approaches. Means-end analysis - breaking the problem into two or more subproblems. Often ill-defined problems can have well defined subproblems.
