Unrest in 1909, 1911 (us sends marines to get rid of government) Essentially becoming a neo-political country (unofficial control) Gave us right to build a 2nd canal (us gave them money) Keep other countries from building another canal (not really interested in building another canal) Nicaragua nationalism had a strong anti-imperialist feeling. Accepted by all except augusto cesar sandino. Sandino refused to give up arms (he formed his own army in defense of national sovereignty in nicaragua) Sandino talked about magnets of wall street. Sandino felt that it was us as a whole that exploited nicaragua.
