The mother sheds tears because she has just been
offended/lack of respect from an Iranian man. But there is
nothing she can do, she is basically powerless because of
the rules of conduct of the time.

Marji opposes the kinds of worldviews she has around her;
she has left Iran and she really isn’t enjoying her life.
Marji cannot cope with her identity being Iranian, but at
the same time she has an inner voice telling her to be true
to your roots/maintain your own ethical way of living.
