PHILOS 1 Lecture 3: SUMMARY # 3
Document Summary
We have nutritional soul or soul elements, an animal soul or soul elements, and soul elements of the mind or intellect (nous). They are organized and integrated with each other, in a hierarchy where the nutritional soul is indispensable for life and regulates ingestion, assimilation and release of what we consider as food (including air, water) as well as species reproduction. The animal elements play their regulatory and formative function in faculties and a certain level of mind (sense perception, appetite and desire, locomotion, affects like anger, animal reproduction). Intellect/mind [greek: nous] regulates, forms and processes for us what is thinking, understanding, arguing. (theoretical) as well as the pursuit of goods and the good. It also rules over those soul elements we share with the animals and the plant. Our complex soul, our differentiated organization of souls and soul elements still is integrated into the order of nature, making us one species of living things in nature.
