Lecture 5 chapter 3 & chapter 4. Preterm is born prior to 38 weeks gestation. Low-birthweight is less than 5 pounds. Small for gestational age infants are those who weigh less than 90% of what babies at the same stage weigh. Age of viability is the age at which a preterm infant can survive - about 22 weeks. Has come down significantly over the years due to medical intervention that helps them survive. After 27 their survival rate is much higher. The us does well in reducing mortality rates for infants, but romania is doing best, and also russia, costa rica, poland, and a few others are doing better. Romania is very special because of a policy where abortions were illegal. In the us the infant mortality rate is 6/1000 infants. Us has higher rate of infant mortality than approximately 50 other countries including hungary and greece. Low-birthweight is a major factor in infant mortality, also pre-term.
