Document Summary
Stress is a negative emotional experience accompanied by predictable biochemical, psychology, and behavioral changes, directed either toward altering the stressful event or accommodating to its effects. Stress-> eliciting event (the stressor)--> subjective evaluation (appraisal of the stressor) -->reaction. Stressor can be the expectation of anticipation of the event. Subjective evaluation - am i going to be harmed, is it more than i can handle. Primary appraisal- is the event positive, negative, or neutral; if negative does it imply threat, harm, challenge. Secondary- do i have the coping abilities and resources . Are they sufficient to meet the threat, harm or challenge: reaction-stress response. Hemostasis- maintaining stability in the internal envt. The stress response can bring things back to homeostasis (balance)- fight or flight. Stress- non specific response of the body to any demand made on it. Heat - same stress response- cold , infection , trauma. Theoretical contributions to the study of stress. Increase in hormones in largest adrenal glands.
