Document Summary
Empathy is a way of understanding another person by stepping into another"s shoes. you actively are understanding what the other person is feeling to the extent that you almost feel like you are experiencing what they are experiencing. Sympathy is less intense, and is simply feeling. Bad for the other person, understanding that they are struggling but not actually feeling their pain within yourself. To show someone empathy, you should actively be listening to them and engaged in the conversation, don"t interrupt when they are speaking, and offer advice and words of encouragement to their situation. I feel that you know when someone shows you empathy after things like them sharing their own experience in a situation similar to your own. Also when they seem to mirror your emotions. Asking permission, what they need in the moment, is a great tool to use to show your empathy to someone.
