Definition of psychology- the scientific study of behavior and mental processes. Importance of ancient greeks- first culture to start offering natural explanations for phenomena rather than supernatural ones. Empiricism- the view that knowledge originates in experience and that science should, therefore, rely on observation and experimentation. Wilhelm wundt- had the first psychological experiment in 1879 in university of leipzig. Measured time lag between hearing a sound and pressing a key. Edward titchener- studied structuralism and was a student of wundt. Introspection- looking inward and reporting elements of one"s experience when sensing something. Functionalism- looking at why we think and feel. William james- american father of psychology more interested in practical application and was influenced by darwin. Mary calkins- first female president of apa in 1905. Studied at harvard under william james and graduated with pre-requirements for a ph. d. but was not given one because she was a female. Margaret floy washburn- first female to get the first psychology ph. d.
