Lecture 2:
“Evidence” for Freud’s Ideas
Dreams are attempts at wish fulfillment
Dreams are signifying you have a wish for something
Freudian Slips
A real life example; wrote ‘Drew’ instead of her
teacher’s name (Drew is her husband).
Allowed us to say something we shouldn’t say
Not falsifiable, everything left up to interpretation. This
means that it is BAD science. (falsifiable is able to be
proved wrong).
Yet he was still very influential in the field of
psychology
Most scientists do not believe in Freud’s theories
Psychodynamic Formulations after Freud
Object Relations & Attachment Theory:
Object (important people) relations theory
Relationships with important others constitute a
crucial motive underlying human behavior.
Focusing on relationship with primary caregiver,
usually mother
Bowlby: Early relationships with caregiver
[anxious/] avoidant attachment
[anxious/] resistant/ambivalent attachment
Securely attached
3 types of attachment above.
A child who is securely attached will be
upset when the mother leaves, and calmed
when she returns to the room.
Avoidant attachments show that mother has
shown her child that if they are distressed
they should be independent and deal with it
on their own. Child does not go towards the
mother or make eye contact. Not really
crying, just seems pissed off.

Resistant is when the baby goes to mother
for comfort after she leaves and then
continues to cry and cry.
Different experiences can change your attachment style to
others. Avoidant adults are less interested in
relationships and not as upset about ending a relationship.
Ambivalent adults are highly focused on relationships and
fume on greatly when there are relationship problems.
Securely attached adults will behave in between the two.
The Humanistic Approach:
Appreciating our Potential
Phenomenology
An understanding of a person’s own unique first person
perspective on his or her life; experience the world
as that person does.
Goal is to understand a person’s construal (how they
make sense and interpret the world)
The Self - Self-Schema
Beliefs and knowledge about ourselves that shape our
lives; based on how we were raised and our
experiences.
Really shapes and influences perceptions, emotions,
and behaviors. How you view yourself impacts how you
feel and think.
Personal myths; stories of our life.
EX: person thinks she has strong people skills,
even though it’s not really true. She still
believes it, and since it is positive, she will
feel better about herself and be able to do
better things. If it is negative, you will feel
worse and do less.
Actual self, ought self, ideal self
Maybe ideal self is a athlete, actual self is a
college student, and your ought self is a lawyer
because your parents think that’s what you should
be. Can also be true for personality; lazy is
actual, ought is motivated, and ideal is someone
who only has to do things they would like to do.
