Cognitive Behavioral Approaches
●irrational/negative thoughts cause behavior problems
●Beck - Negative beliefs about themselves, world, future
○Automatic thoughts
■E.g. overgeneralization, all-or-nothing (if it
can’t be perfect I shouldn’t do it at all), mind
reading (I just know people in this room don’t
like me no matter what evidence)
●CBT Triangle
●The double-sided arrows mean that each component can cause
both of the others
●Thought (“I’m not good at anything”) -> feeling (angry,
sad) -> behavior (stay in bed; not try things) -> affects
thoughts and keeps on going
●Cognitive restructuring (challenge automatic thoughts using
evidence against them)
○Use thought records
○Example:
○The goal is to restructure the thought they have to
change how they negatively feel about themselves
○CBT is present-focused (happening right now instead of
past), time-limited (contract with therapist on how
many sessions one will go to), structured (start with
making an agenda, collaborate with client for cous of
session, working through what goal is, coming up with
homework…), homework (practicing new skills or ways of
thinking).
■Found to be very effective for many different
disorders because of these reasons.
■The therapist does not just say what the person
will do for hw, but talks with client about what
will be most helpful for them
■Homework outside of learning with therapist
reinforces the skill and makes it more likely the
person will use it outside of the session
○Anxiety disorders, bipolar, obesity, ED’s, chronic
pain… all kinds of disorders can benefit from CBT
○How do you modify something when it’s true?
■Therapist talks about a way to modify thoughts so
the person can cope with a situation,
