Women and children in low incomes countries. 16% of children <5 were underweight (2011) Obesity: prevalence is increasing in all countries, 30 % of the world"s population. Linked to non communicable diseases: heart disease, stroke, diabetes. Those who do not get the proper nutrition. People who lack sufficient energy and nutrients. People who are too heavy for their height. Two main causes of undernutrition - inadequate dietary intake and illness. Immediate cause - increase in total energy intake coupled with decrease in energy expenditure. Protein, energy, five micronutrients: vitamin a, iodine, zinc, and calcium. More extreme case of undernutrition = severe acute malnutrition. Birthweight is an extremely important determinant of the extent to which a child will thrive and become a healthy adult. Fetuses that do not get sufficient and appropriate nutrition may suffer a number of problems. Addressing undernutrition should be aimed at this group.
