Document Summary

We looked at failures of introspection and the impact this had on our knowledge of our own beliefs. Pre-science - no exemplars, no shared standards, everyone needs to defend their theory from the ground up in each work. If you spend so much time disproving other people"s work, there is not much time left to defend your own theory. Paradigm = research tradition - a shared set of standards and practices within a research community. Seeks to expand upon the exemplar and ask how to explain new phenomena using it. Exemplar (also called a paradigm) - an achievement people point to as an example of a good result. Talk about a shared set of common assumptions to lay a ground basis to later have a meaningful discussion. Puzzle solving - what normal science does. Anomaly - things a paradigm should account for, but cannot. Sometimes anomalies can turn into crisis if the anomaly has been unresolved for a long time.
