SOCECOL 10 Lecture 9: Control and Between Subjects Design (02/08/17)
Document Summary
Random sampling: selection of participants from the larger population to participate in your research study. Most of us will be using convenience sampling. Downside of convenience sampling participants who are easy to get our hands on may compromise our external validity. People who are most convenient to you, (cid:449)ho (cid:455)ou k(cid:374)o(cid:449), are(cid:374)"t representative of all uci students: a unique subset of uci students. But random sampling would involve some random-generating apparatus or technique: makes it so that our sample is representative of the population. Random assignment: the assignment of our selected participants to groups (e. g. experimental and control) Most powerful tool to distribute potential confounds between the groups. Confounds are some additional variable that is influencing our dependent variable and it is varying at the same rate as our independent variable. No longer considered a confound because it is evenly distributed. No(cid:449) (cid:272)alled a(cid:374) (cid:862)e(cid:454)tra(cid:374)eous(cid:863) (cid:448)aria(cid:271)le: not a problem that affect our conclusions.
