SOCECOL 10 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Criterion Validity, Design Week, Construct Validity
Document Summary
Deductive = start from theory + collect data. Inductive = start with data + put together theory (observe patterns) There is no shortage of time to complete the study. Risk is accepted, no theory may emerge at all. Abundance of sources (wealth of literature available) Specific hypothesis -> specifically intended for theory testing. Doesn"t have a specific hypothesis -> just want to observe. Face validity, criterion validity, + construct validity. Criterion validity = validation based on correspondence to an already validated measure. Construct validity = the relationship to other concepts + variables fit what would be expected by theory. Internal = concepts + measures in the study clearly + precisely represent relations between components of phenomenon of interest, especially whether it avoids confounding. Absolute zero -> enables to multiply or divide numbers. Interval doesn"t have absolute zero -> temperature, iq. Ratio has an absolute zero -> height, weight, age.
