PSY 162 Lecture Notes - Lecture 15: Roy Lichtenstein, Impressionism
The Impressionists…
● Pop artist Roy Lichtenstein made a series of prints on the same subject
○ Rouen Cathedral
○ The colors he chose are equiluminescent in image #2 on the left
○ Much harder to make out the shape of the cathedral
You can’t see depth with form and color. We’re messing with the magno system. Artists is
playing with contrast. Without luminance contrast,
Why?
● The where system-
○ Sees shading
○ But is also colorblind
● w/o luminance contrast
○ Images can have
● In some paintings-
○ Moneet experimented with the use of very low luminance contrast
○ & little → no color contrast
○ Stimulates the where system- but not the what
● MOnet used a broad range of hies
○ But all are very desaturated
○ Because the color contrast is so low
■ You can get a real sense of the depth
○ The low contrast stimulate the where system ( but not the what)
○ Give a sense of depth through shading cues and perspective
So for Depth Perception
● Luminance information is necessary
○ Color is not
○ Which means we can have fun with these 2 systems…
Does Color Matter At All
● The shadows on most of the planes of her face are bluish
○ But you still have a sense of 3 dimensionality
○ Even through her face is made up of weird colors
○ The proportion of luminance is correct to perceive depth
○ You can use any color- as long as luminance is correct… you will see depth
What Does This Mean?
● Color can now be used for “poetic & symbolic” purposes
○ No longer descriptive- but to convey particular emotions or meanings

Document Summary
Pop artist roy lichtenstein made a series of prints on the same subject. The colors he chose are equiluminescent in image #2 on the left. Much harder to make out the shape of the cathedral. You can"t see depth with form and color. Moneet experimented with the use of very low luminance contrast. Stimulates the where system- but not the what. Monet used a broad range of hies. Because the color contrast is so low. You can get a real sense of the depth. The low contrast stimulate the where system ( but not the what) Give a sense of depth through shading cues and perspective. Which means we can have fun with these 2 systems . The shadows on most of the planes of her face are bluish. But you still have a sense of 3 dimensionality. Even through her face is made up of weird colors. The proportion of luminance is correct to perceive depth.
