Document Summary

First to qualify particulate mechanism of inheritance through experiments with garden peas. Character- observable heritable feature that may vary among individuals. Trait-one or two more detectable variants in a genetic character. Breeding lines always had only 1 of the traits. F1 generation- (first filial(son) generation)- offspring arising from a parental cross. F2 generation- (second filial generation)- offspring resulting from interbreeding (or self pollination) of the hybrid f1 generation. Mendel called purple flower color dominant & white recessive. Concept 1: alleles: alternative versions of genes; account for variation in inherited characters. Relate to chromosome and dna, dna at that locus can vary slightly in its nucleotide sequence in its nucleotide sequence. Variation in the nucleotide sequence can affect the function of the encoded protein, thus an inherited feature. Concept 2: organism inherit 2 alleles; (1 from each parent) for each character. Haploid egg carries 1 allele and haploid sperm carries other.
