Document Summary

Encoded in sequence of non-lapping base triplets (codons) Codon sequence provides correct primary order for given protein. Follows same base-pairing rules as double stranded dna. Promoter: specific dna sequence where rna polymerase attaches. Transcription factors: proteins that mediate binding of rna polymerase. Transcription factors + rna polymerase = transcription initiation. Nucleotides added to 3" end of growing mrna mrna elongated in 5" to 3" direction. Rna polymerase released & can be re-used mrna transcript translated "as is" in prokaryotes. Rna splicing: removes introns (intervening) & joins exons (expressed) regions. Transfer rna (trna): brings mrna & amino acids together trna"s not identical: Anticodons base pair with complementary codons on mrna. Bring together trna"s carrying amino acids & mrna. Ribosomes have 2 subunits; 1 large & 1 small. P site: holds trna carrying growing polypeptide chain. A site: holds trna carrying next amino acid added. E site: exit site where discharged trnas leave ribosome.
