HSC 3211 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Allostatic Load, Sequela
Document Summary
Risk factors- increase the chance of disease of injury. Complications- conditions secondary to the original disease or injury. Sequelae- conditions directly caused by the original disease or injury. Prevention- attempt to limit or interrupt the risk factors, etiology, onset or complications/sequelae of disease or injury. Disability- adverse impact of disease of physical/psychological/ social function (objective impact) Who- a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. Breslow- health status is current equilibrium between organism and its environment; ability of organism to maintain that equilibrium. Determinants of health: biological, behavioral, environmental, geographical, medical, socioeconomic. Challenges that create certain demands to which the organism has to respond. Health is maintain only if both of these are limited in quantity and duration this way the organism can adapt. Allostatic load- an individual"s continuous demand for adaptation to various stressors. Previously believed that good health meant low death rate and high life expectancy.
