HSC 4555 Lecture Notes - Lecture 13: Folate Deficiency, Chronic Kidney Disease, Ferritin
Document Summary
Anemia- a decrease in the oxygen carrying capacity. When rbc are going through stages reticulocyte is right before rbc becomes mature. Inhale oxygen, shuffled to heart, exchange of gases, dropped off at tissues carbon dioxide is picked up, transported back to heart, eventually lungs. Macrophages will break down the rbc into two main portions: recycle and portion that is waste. If you have an iron deficiency then iron is leaving the body- coming from the fact that they have some type of blood loss. Biliverdin -> bilirubin (toxic) converted into a more non-toxic form and is water soluble and can be eliminated from the body via bile/then stool. Can take a ride on hemoglobin called carbaminohemoglobin. Polycythemia-excess of rbcs too many=very thick/increase in viscosity. Cell is unable to carry oxygen like it should. Don"t have the building blocks to build the rbcs. Not able to make any rbcs aplastic anemia. Shortness of breath, always trying to catch breath oxygen.
