Infectious diseases of the oral cavity & gastrointestinal tract. Herpes simplex virus type 1 or type 2 (dna virus) Reactivation of latent virus due to trauma, fever, physiologic changes, stress. Biofilm formation: coaggregation of bacteria and their products. Glycocalyx slime layer that lets bacteria attach firmly to enamel. Hardened plaque (on teeth for >72hr), cannot be completely removed by brushing or flossing. Periodontitis: inflammation of the tissues that support the teeth (gingiva, supporting bone) 1) mix of microbes, 2) reduced host defenses, 3) improper diet, and 4) poor dental hygiene. Gastritis inflamed mucosal lining of stomach. Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, myalgia, headache malaise, low- grade fever. Hospital epidemics: airborne transmission, contact with contaminated fomites. Symptoms: abdominal pain and swelling, jaundice, pale stools, dark urine, fatigue, fever, itching, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting. Jaundice is yellowing of the skin and eyes. This condition forms when there is too much bilirubin in your system.
