A&O SCI 1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Stoma, Oceanic Climate, Tonne
Document Summary
One feature of the ocean with a pronounced influenced climate is sea ice. Ocean has an effect on the responce of the climate system to heating or cooling. Our carbon emissions have resulted ina significant increase in atmospheric co2. Preindustrail levels were approx 280 ppm to about 400ppm now. This is increasing the trapping of the planet"s terrestrial radiation by nearly 2 w/m^2. 1 gigaton (gt) = 1 billion tons = 1*10^15g= 1 petagram (pg) 1 ton carbon = 3. 664 tons of c02. There are 3 main types of fossil fuels. Fossilf uels are typically composed of compounds containing hydrogen and carbon atoms. The porcess of burning fossil fuels always results in carbon dioxide being emittied into the atmosphere. Cement produciton also produces carbon dioxide thouhg fossil fuel emissions are 20x larger. Carbon emissions ahve increased steadily since the beginning of the industiral era. Human activity is also adding co2 to the atmosphere through deforestation.
