CLASSIC 30 Lecture Notes - Lecture 15: Antihero
Document Summary
Introduce joseph campbell"s theory of the monomyth/heroic quest narrative. It what we al relate to the most and resonates the most. Heroic quest must result in the hero coming back with what he has gained for the bene t of the community. There is something that people"s psyche responds to when the hero myth follows this format. Argued that people in religious narratives followed this hero narratives- this is why they have so much hold. Campbell"s theory has been criticized because could be too crude- too general. Example, in jason and the argonauts, jason becomes an anti-hero in the end. Also, he only succeeds because medea does all of the work for him. If things are just following this story line, then for example, jesus follows this story, he must have never existed because it"s just this story. There can be details that are rooted in historical fact.
