We do not always communicate honestly with one another. Lies often build upon each other (one is not enough) Relationships / society is built on honesty. Honesty can sometimes have unpleasant / risky consequences. Widespread lying undermines society / relationships. Increased expectations of dependability / honesty, as we get closer to someone. Consider consequences of learning someone has lied to you. Violates shared expectation of trust in close relationships. If subject matter of lie is important / if relationship was very close more pain, betrayal. Deception threatens relationships (esp. over important issues) patterns of deception leads to termination of relationship. It"s not a big deal ) pretending to be happy to see someone, faking interest in a store) Save face - prevent embarrassment of self or others. Make self look better (ie. covering up one"s mistakes) Lie to meet / get to know someone, excuse to spend time with someone. Make self look good (like in front of potential employer)
