COMM ST 10 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Interpersonal Communication, Nonverbal Communication

20 views3 pages

Document Summary

Three axioms (truths) of communication: communication can be intentional or unintentional: Trying to get something across, can be planned. Not always verbal, but most of the time it is, ex: asking a question in class, talking to a professor after class, planned ahead of time. We don"t mean to send a message. Verbal ex: word slips something we say but don"t mean to say. Feelings and ideas that we are not conscious of but that are on our minds. Non-verbal ex: during speech your voice shakes, rolling eyes, yawning while someone is talking - this automatically happens, you weren"t trying to do this. We tend to believe non-verbal over verbal naturally. Since it"s unintentional, people will see it differently: all behavior has the potential to communicate messages. We cannot, not communicate; all behavior communicates. Source receiver, we can take both roles at the same time.
