Bathymetry is the topography of the ocean floor. Study of bathymetry did not begin until wwii, when researchersbegan surveying the ocean bottom using new sound-surveying technology. The deep sea bottom is not flat everywhere, but is rather just as uneven, bumpy, and mountainous as that on land. The bathymetry of the ocean can be roughly divided into 3 sections: Midocean ridges are a continuous submarine mountain range that winds it way through all the oceans. The drowned edges of the continents are the continental margins, is the area closest to shore. Deep-ocean basins connect the large span between the continental margins and the midocean ridges, make up the ocean floow between these 2 areas. As you leave the continent, youc ross the continental margins, the deep ocean basin, and then the midocean ridge. Not all midocean ridges are positioned in the center of the oceans.
