Reef- lagoon (between the shore and barrier reef, patches of coral) barrier reef- Evolution of coral reefs- discovered by charles darwin. 2 - fringe reefs right next to the shore. 3 - fringe reef turns into a barrier as the island shrinks. 4 - atoll- only coral is around, no more island. 5 - turns into a seamount (sea mountain) 1 - in between 30 degrees north and south, in the tropics. 2 - 65 degrees to 91 degrees f. 3 - clear water- no nutrients in it. 4 - no coral reefs where there are rivers because there is too much sediment. Miles of coral reef the size of british columbia 1/2 of the diversity that occurs in the sea. Phillipines has the longest extent of coral reef.
