Consolidation of national states by late 19th century: 1880-1920s. How it changed the nature of economy in latin american countries. Some people tried to subvert all existing hierarchies (from colonial period) Ideological divide between conservatism and liberalism but others were trying to stay in power. Wanted to implement changed but also stay on top to control how the changes would go about. Tried to exclude popular groups from politics. Wanted to change society but didn"t want to undermine power of newly rising elites (spanish elites, non-indigenous or african) There was an unprecedented expansion of people participating in politics. Before, only a tiny number of elites had access to politics. The change after 1820s: everyone could participate in politics. Meant that number of interests at play were greater as well. People from different backgrounds want different things and mobilized to obtain different goals and ends. People didn"t agree on basis of what they wanted out of politics: militarization .
