Korea was completely destroyed by a us bombing operation during korean war in 1950. Park jung hee: head of military dictatorship and president until assassinated in 1979. Determined to grow korean economy whatever it took. Therefore, they had to export manufactured goods. Many countries didn"t recommend this because they didn"t think korea could compete with other manufacturers like europe and latin america. A few families ( ) who were given resources to lead export and grow business. Park chung hee didn"t allow corruption when it came to economic development. Allow companies doing well and cut out those not doing well. Have to compete with other countries in manufacturing. If korea tried to lead with exports and manufactured goods 20 years before, it wouldn"t have worked because of the time period. Benefited from economy thriving bc wars ended. Korea didn"t allow us goods to enter their market, cutting off imports. Focused on growing domestic markets, being self sufficient.
