Pain and nociception are related but not the same. There are very cases where people are born with out nociception. They have to be trained to avoid potential hazards. Even a simple task like sitting and sleeping is assoc. with perception of pain. She was well trained to avoid damaging instances. She developed inflammation in the joints and died at age 28. Thermal - (different from temperature) - can be activated when tissue is being damaged. They are polymodal - can respond to diff stimuli. Filled with chemicals that can activate other nociceptors. E. g. needle punctures skin = first sharp pain. First pain is provided by a-delta fibers (myelinated) - much faster speed. Second pain is provided by c fibers are unmyelinated - so much slower. Referred pain - angina and appendicitis is associated with pain coming from the left arm, close to the neck, and chest. Nociceptors activated in esophagus associated with chest and back.
