PSYCH 10 Lecture Notes - Lecture 13: Joe Paterno, Canoe.Com, Factor Analysis
Document Summary
Week 6 lecture 13- the personality situation debate. People are malleable depending on situation they are placed in. Early 80s and 90s- arguments that personality is a myth. How is it possible if things in us are stable? (ex. Class act coach joe paterno, integrity in a lot of things expect one thing) We believe that there are differences in people, but we don"t know where it originates or how to characterize them. Found that some adjectives strongly correlate with others, so they go together. Factor analysis- how many actual personality differences are there. Agreeableness- trust, helpfulness, etc. , how helpful you are. Neuroticism- emotionality, the extent to which you feel negative emotions. Extraversion- enjoyment of social situations (not about skill with which you interact with people) Non-valenced dimensions- it is not good to an extreme of any type of personality (ex. Agreeableness can lead to either ruthless or a pushover) Traits are consistent overtime, suggest that we must be real.
