Document Summary
How to know if symptoms are severe enough to be disorder. Can we define disorders specific enough so all refers to same behavior/mental state. Can diagnostic labels be used to treat instead of stigmatize. Defn: patterns, thoughts, feelings or actions that are deviant, distressful and dysfunctional. Patterns: collection of symptoms that tend to go together instead of just one. Distress and dysfunction: symptoms are severe enough to interfere with one"s daily life + well being. To deviate in general--vary from what would normally happen. Disorder may also be a deviation from typical developmental. In psych, behavior deviant based on culture pathway. Behavior of yelling hours on end + painting faces colors of team is not deviant in the context of a football game. Helpful to understand nature + cause of psychological symptoms first. Old treatments: exorcising evil spirits, beatings, caging/restraint and trepanning/making a burr hole (cut out circular piece of skull)
