SOCIOL 101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 13: Manifest And Latent Functions And Dysfunctions, Week, Class Conflict
Document Summary
Elementary forms - main arguments: theory of knowledge. Basic ideas we use to make sense of the world; classify things. Categories of time, space, cause and effect. Basic categories are things humans come up with. Ex: tuesday (an idea, not something physical) Marx: alienation (humans create god and then believe god created us) Dismisses religion as a big part of human history. Historical change is driven by technological change and class conflict. Representation of society"s connection to one another. After religion is created, it can"t have a big impact on what people do. Durkheim disagrees with materialistic perspective on this. Ideas are more than just material conditions (distinction) Durkheim lays foundation for positive approach to sociology (based on observation) Functionalism: analyzing society by looking at functions or roles of different institutions (economy, family, state, etc); analogy of a body. Institutions have latent function: functions that people aren"t aware of. Schooling: also keeps kids off the streets, not in trouble.
