The role of parents in promoting language development. Live language during the early years is the single best predictor of language development and later academic achievement. Tv and radio do not provide live language. Language development is enhanced when parents: continually engage their young children in verbal dialogues. This is an example of contingent responsiveness: respond to their questions and other verbal comments. Label new things for them: more language, parents should not attempt to correct their young children"s pronunciation. Instead, label continuously, use correct words themselves, slow down: parents should speak clearly, and face-to-face, with their young children so that: They can watch the formation of their words: clearly hear how sentences are formed and words are pronounced, more language. It is helpful if parents understand the language limitations of young children. Shows up in their failure to accurately comprehend reverse- order sentences.
