Family Decision Making
• Homes and families can provide a base for cooperation, coordination, and negotiations.
• When conflict rather than harmony is characteristic of a home or family, the decision-
making process becomes more complicated.
Family Decision Types
• Accommodation decisions is where the family accepts the opinion or point of view of the
dominate head of the family.
• Consensual decisions are reached by a consensus of family members.
• De facto decisions occur when there is a lack of opinion of what to do.
Reaching Consensus
• Family makes a mutual agreement equally acceptable to all individuals involved.
• Consensus rules
o Everyone must not be afraid to express their ideas and opinions.
o Make sure everyone understands the topic/problem.
o Make sure everyone is following, listening to, and understanding each other.
• All members should contribute their ideas and knowledge related to the subject.
o Stay on the task.
o Disagreement is OK and healthy.
o Separate the issue from the personalities.
o Spend some time on this process.

o Where to shop
o How much to pay
o When to buy
o Who should buy
• Life changes & consumer decision:
o Change points in a family can affect decisions. Those occur at
