SOC 2805 Lecture Notes - Lecture 13: Mustahabb, Sharia, Mubah
Document Summary
It must be remembered that the vast majority of religions in history have all seen themselves as holistic- involving not just some parts of life, but all aspects and elements of daily life and identity. That being said, this perspective is widely rejected in the postmodern industrialized. In connection with islam, there are two initial things to notice here: in many places accommodations to muslim laws and norms have been made. Sharia law, the law of the qur"an, is civil law. In this case, the only harmony that can exist is complete submission to muslim standards by all people. If it is forbidden under islam law to eat pork, and one"s neighbor still eats pork, a strict islamicist will find this offensive, protest, and demand change or be violent. Some aspects of culture might be distinguished from islam, but what those elements are is a subject for passionate disagreement among muslims from different places, and different perspectives.
