COMM 1000 Lecture Notes - Lecture 14: Groupthink
Document Summary
Small group: at least three, ideal number for collaboration is five to seven people. Odd numbers of people is a good thing. The group needs to be big enough to get a superordinate goal, so it is too big just for one person to complete. A common purpose and some sort of connection. Primary groups: your family, first small group you encounter. Problem-solving groups: often formed in a workplace. (work groups and self-directed work teams) Social loafers: individuals that do nothing in group settings. Forming: the group first has to assemble. Storming: the tensions rise when different opinions start to rise up between group members. Norming: every group finds their rhythm and how they can work together. Performing: groups start to perform well together after finding their rhythm. Initiating-contributing: okay guys what are we going to do. Proposing new ideas or a changed way of regarding the group goal. Information seeking/giving: what do we need to know.
