What is small group communication: at least three people, 5-7, collaborative groups, social groups, professional groups, work groups, class groups, tackle some kind of larger goal, superordinate goal. Task group communication: the four-phase model, forming, group comes together, storming, start to sort out tensions, personality differences, getting to know each other, norming, getting used to one another, performing, starting to get stuff done. Group dynamics: maintenance roles: encouraging, harmonizing, compromising, gatekeeping and expediting, following, trying to keep the group together, working. Group dynamics: individual roles: aggressing, blocking, recognition-seeking, self-confessing, acting the jokester, dominating, help-seeking, special-interest pleading. Conformity: group create norms, make you feel like you need to follow them even if they"re wrong or silly. Groupthink: worst case scenario outcome, when a group is so full of energy towards alignment, so much pressure to be the same that suddenly everyone agrees, start to make bad decisions, over look details.
