DIET 4360 Lecture Notes - Lecture 12: Hematuria, Albuminuria, Kidney Failure
Document Summary
Uti: bacterial infection of urinary tract, bladder, and kidneys. Cranberry juice/blueberry juice inhibit the adherence of bacteria to the epithelial cells. Probiotics colonize the intestine and replace coliform/ecoli bacteria, making it an important host defense. Can progress up the bladder to cystitis. Can progress from there up to the kidneys = pyelonephritis. Causes damage to glomerular system: large protein losses in urine leading to hypoalbuminemia, edema, hypercholesterolemia, hypercoagulability, abnormal bone metabolism, sodium excretion, elevated ldl, vldl, and lipoprotein (a), malnutrition. Acute glomerulonephritis: inflammation of the capillary loops of the glomerulus. Symptoms: hematuria, hypertension, mild loss of renal function. Also causes damage to glomerulus, red bloody urine (hematuria) after bacterial infection. Wide variation, some kidneys decline rapidly others are stable at a stage for years. Egfr < 60 and/or evidence of kidney damage and persistent albuminuria ( >30 mg of urine albumin per gram of urine creatinine)
