Characterized by melena (dark, tarry stool), hematochezia (fresh bright red stool), or brbpr (bloody stool) Complications including diverticulitis develop in 20% of people. F/n hx: diet history and food frequency, focusing on fiber intake and sources of fiber (esp. insoluble fiber and fluid intake: anth: current weight, changes, bmi. Provide nutrient rx: osis mnt does not require special nutrition intervention except for consuming high- fiber, adequate fluid, and pa. Itis mnt reduces oral intake until bleeding and diarrhea subside, bowel rest, surgical resection if needed, iv antibiotics and possibly pn. Itis goals: allow for bowel rest and healing while minimizing the risk of inflammation and bleeding.
