DIET 4475 Lecture Notes - Lecture 54: Sickle-Cell Disease, Malabsorption, Lactation
Document Summary
Immediately following the presence of sirs, circulating serum zinc levels decline to roughly half of normal levels and remain so until the sirs begins to resolve (generally 7 14 days, depending on the etiology of the sirs). Impaired immune function: poor wound healing, decreased appetite. Impaired functions of enzymes, vitamin a, vit d: hallmark sign of growth retardation and sexual immaturity. Zinc interactions: vitamin a, needed for conversion of retinol to retinal, necessary for hepatic synthesis of retinol-binding protein, copper. Stimulates synthesis of metallothionein which has a higher affinity for cu than. Zn: calcium, diminished only with ingestion of zinc supplements when calcium intake is low, cadmium if present in high concentrations. Zinc and the common cold: prevents formation of proteins needed by cold virus to replicate, may attach to proteins on virus preventing them from entering body cells, do not take longer than 1 week.
